the world didn't end

A lot of paranoid people breathed a sigh of relief last week when the much anticipated (and for some doomsayers, much dreaded) turning on of the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland didn’t result in the earth getting sucked up by a microscopic black hole created by the 17 mile long machine.
But if you’re a paranoid, there is no sense in relaxing just yet, Yes, the machine has been turned on, but the high capacity collisions (which could create microscopic black holes) have not occurred just yet. It will take more tests and several weeks for the particles to gain enough speed (within a millionth of a percent shy of the speed of light) before this will occurr. But the geniuses say there is absolutely nothing to worry about, the tiny black holes would disintegrate in a fraction of a second and I think I believe them.
But this machine is such a huge huge major human achievement and should really be getting more attention for its implications. (some scientists compare its significance to the great pyramids of Egypt) It will probably answer fundamental questions about the beginnings of the universe, probably prove the forty-year-old Higgs particle theory, and maybe, just maybe prove the existence of alternate dimensions.
Slamming the protons together at such a speed will recreate the conditions similar to the very beginnings of the Universe when it was a mere one millionth of a second old and will release particles never before able to be studied in a lab, confirming the question, ‘Why do particles have mass?’ And if it doesn’t, physicists will have to go back to the drawing board, and scrap a 44-year-old theory.
Or… the earth will get sucked up and we’ll all be erased from existence.

Speaking of. . .
. . . cops picking on cyclists (from the last post), I just heard about that brutal arrest of a cyclist riding with critical mass in Times Square last week by an officer who claimed he saw the cyclist "weaving in and out of lanes and obstructing traffic", After ordering him to stop, according to the officer, the cyclist deliberately drove his bike into him, sending both of them falling to the ground. The cyclist was charged with assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.
Then this video of the incident surfaced which doesn’t quite coincide with the officer’s account. He must not have learned from the RNC that this stuff is hard to get away with when you’re surrounded by a b’gillion cameras.

stabbings
Guess I was wrong being so annoyed at the huge influx of coppers roaming the streets of my neighborhood lately (when there are plenty of ‘sketchier’ neighborhoods that could probably use it more). But apparently crazy stuff has been going down around these parts like this incident right by my place (the Daily News’ over-sensationalized version) and this. (although that last one probably has nothing to do with the increased police presence)
Still, in all fairness, I did see some of those no-good coppers ticketing a poor innocent cyclist the other day for something presumably inconsequential.
DISCLAIMER: no offense to anyone reading this who is or is related to law enforcement. I’m sure you/he/she is an upstanding individual who contributes positively to society.
